| The National Probation Service for England and Wales was established on 1 April 2001. The South Wales Probation Area was formed at the same time, following the amalgamation of the South, Mid and West Glamorgan Probation Services.
The Area covers the geographical area from Cardiff in the East, to Swansea in the West, to Merthyr in the North, and a population of some 1.25 million people.
The Area is supervising approximately 7000 offenders at any one time through Community Rehabilitation Orders, Community Punishment Orders and those released on licence.
A Community Punishment Order means that an offender has been sentenced to serve a specified number of hours in unpaid work. This work must be carried out for the benefit of the community and should strive to encompass environmental, recycling and diversity issues.
